What You Should Know to Begin Affiliate Marketing
Posted on November 4, 2009 by Work From Home

While affiliate marketing does offer a shorter sales process for you, there are still some things you need to know before you can just put up some website, try to drive traffic and get decent conversions.
First things first, you need to know how to pick products. You will need to do some affiliate program research. That involves deciding on the niche you wish to market and then researching where to find the products or services that you want to start promoting within that niche. Some people will look for a hot selling product first and then find ways to get a piece of the niche profits. The problem with that is there will be a lot of competition, so sales ratios will be lower.
A good affiliate marketing person knows his or her market – and part of the way they get to know them is through visiting the affiliate related forums and paying attention to the questions that come up.
You will also want to do some keyword research as well. Get familiar with your potential customers and what they are searching for so that you know what terms to focus your affiliate marketing campaign on. To help make your job easier, some affiliate programs have these listed for you. You can also find words and phrases other affiliates aren’t using and rank very high for those in search engines like Google for example.
Once you’ve chosen your products or services to market, you need to sign up for the affiliate program. This is a simple process with some companies like ClickBank or Commission Junction, but others have a more involved sign up process.
Next, you’ll want to grab your unique affiliate hyperlink (or URL – example: http://www.website.com/id=XXXXX) for the product, which ensures that you will earn commission on any sales made through your referrals.
Now the fun part – developing targeted website traffic to the affiliate sales page! This involves many ways of online marketing such as writing articles to publish on ezine directories, or Squidoo Pages, or even having pay per click ads pointing people directly to the main sales site.
There are so many ways to capture and drive website traffic that are beyond the scope of this report, so do your research. With so many choices, you are sure to come up with the perfect product to promote – and the best traffic tactics to use with your niche prospects.

Great blog. Do you know of any relevant forums or discussion groups?
I suppose the same ideas could be applied to someone that offers no products but only advertising space on their blog. I guess that could be considered as a product
